Melt fracture
Melt fracture, also known as sharkskin or surface melt fracture, often occurs at the die head and material stage. Here are common checks and solutions:
Die Gap Too Narrow?
Replace with larger gap die inserts to improve flow.
Melt Temperature Too Low?
Increase the temperature of the extruder and die head for better melt flow.
Formulation Issue?
Use a polymer with a wider molecular weight range (e.g., LDPE) instead of one with a narrower range (e.g., LLDPE).
Insufficient Additives?
Increase additives to meet processing requirements and improve film quality.
Output Rate Too High?
Reduce the output rate to prevent excessive strain on the material.
Die Head Material Issue?
Choose the appropriate material for the die head to minimize molten slippage.
